I have a confession to make. I eat food that does not belong to the dessert food group.
Shocking isn’t it? You thought I ate this every day, didn’t you?
- Cupcakes for breakfast
- Pie for lunch
- Oreos for dinner
- Ice cream for dessert.
That’s just on Saturdays.
One of my favorite nondessert foods is Pulled BBQ Chicken. (Excuse me while I wipe the drool running out of the corner of my mouth.)
As I’ve mentioned before (remember the Margarita Cupcakes?), I don’t really enjoy cooking. Especially foods that are time consuming to prepare and foods with lots of ingredients.
That’s why I added crockpot to the 30 Before 30 List. You just throw a bunch of stuff in and let it do the cooking for you.
I didn’t buy a crockpot. I borrowed my mom’s. I’m just going to keep it, and if she never asks for it back, I’ll replace “Buy a crockpot” with “Commandeer a crockpot by any means necessary” and cross #8 off my list.
My mom has 3 crockpots, so I don’t know that she’ll miss this one.
Anyways, with my newfound crockpot, I made Pulled BBQ Chicken. And it was heavenly. Here’s the recipe.
- 2-3 pounds of chicken
- 1.5 cups of chicken broth
- 1 packet of french onion soup mix
- 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
- 1 tablespoon of garlic
- 16-18 ounces of BBQ sauce
Throw everything in and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
And so I achieved #25 on my 30 Before 30.

Question from a semi-vegetarian: What is a pulled chicken? Why do they call it that?
August 9th, 2010 at 6:33 am
I think it just means that the meat is so moist that you can easily pull it apart with a fork.

I love my croc pot! IT is the best invention other than credit cards and a microwave. My problem is usually that no matter what kind of meat i put in there it gets to the point of being pulled.

I love my microwave. =)

Sounds. So. Good.
I have a friend like you — she eats M &M cookies for lunch.

Mmm…M&M cookies…. I’ll swap out the Oreos.

I recently stopped eating chicken, and I have to admit that the one thing that is hard to resist is a smokey pulled chicken sandwich with warm, crusty corn bread oooooohhhhmmmmmmm….
August 10th, 2010 at 6:20 am
Why did you stop eating chicken?
August 13th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
I’ve never liked any meat or fish, so for the past 20 or so the only ‘animal’ i’ve eaten was chicken breast (not off the bone) or eggs. In maybe Feb this year i just kinda…stopped eating it. And i started feeling a little better so since I never reaaaly liked it in general, I’m just going to keep not eating it.

That’s great that you said you’d eat chicken, but not off the bone. I’m the same way. Not a fan of chicken off the bone.

I love my microwave too. That’s why I buy pulled chicken in a plastic container at the grocery store. : ) I’ve bought at least two crockpots with such good intentions and gave them both away.

I’ve seen that and never tried it. But that seems better than waiting 6-8 hours.
August 10th, 2010 at 9:17 am
I own a crock pot and never use it. I’m paranoid about leaving anything turned “on” while I am not in the house. I should try it though, cause nothing would be better than having dinner ready when I come home from work and all the recipes that I hear from nice people like you (see how I suck up!) and in books sound so easy. I like easy.
August 10th, 2010 at 10:09 am
I’m all about easy….wait…did that sound wrong? I’m all about easy when it comes to cooking.
I have to admit that I made the chicken on a Sunday, and I didn’t leave the house until it was done because I was weirded out by leaving the crock pot on.
August 10th, 2010 at 10:27 am
Hee, hee! Now I don’t feel so bad!
August 11th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
I have to tell you both – I used to be the same way until a friend convinced me the house wouldn’t burn down. Go ahead and try it – it will be fine. It really isn’t any different than having your appliances plugged in that you aren’t useing, or the DVD player, the DVR, the cable box, the alarm clock, lamps, i think u get my point:)
August 12th, 2010 at 7:08 am
If you say so, I’ll try it.

Meh, I meant to get that crockpot to you! If your mom steals it back, don’t worry – mine’s waiting for you. Yay you for pulled chicken. Another yummy thing you can put in there – if you like it – are pork tenders and teriyaki sauce. Once cooked, the tenders shred like paper. Pretty darn good.
August 12th, 2010 at 7:08 am
Teriyaki…yummy.
October 18th, 2010 at 10:23 am
Will now steal that recipe.
