Me: I’m taking another sign language class.
Mom: Aren’t you tired of going to school?
Me: Never!
Some days I am tired of going to school. But it’s the act of going, not the learning. If class could come to me, right into my bedroom where I could learn while wearing fake pants, that would be ideal.
I’m 30 years old, and I’ve been in school for most of my life. Here’s a brief history:
-
In 5th grade, I kicked a** at math.
-
In 11th grade, I lost my math smarts.
-
I graduated college in December 2002: a semester early because I was tired of school.
-
By that spring, I was taking Business graduate classes.
-
By the following fall, I decided Business really wasn’t for me. Too much math involved.
-
A few months later, I started Education graduate classes.
-
About a year later, I switched to Humanities graduate classes.
-
Then I took a year off, only to take belly dancing classes and learn to ride a motorcycle instead.
-
Next came the English graduate classes.
You: So you have masters credits in 3 different subjects. Seriously, Thoughtsy. Make up your mind.
-
Once I completed my English Masters, I started teaching at the local community college. Ah-ha! I’m in charge now!
-
Three semesters later, I dropped teaching and started learning American Sign Language (ASL).
I’ll finish the ASL program in about 2-3 years. Then…no more school. Ever.
But…it would be cool to learn Italian. And maybe Spanish.

I love this! Some people (the ones that are really awesome) just love to learn. I LOVE books. I LOVE reading. There is just so much knowledge waiting to be soaked up. I’m currently learning French for no other reason besides the fact that I think it’s beautiful. Keep learning, good luck!
March 20th, 2012 at 11:15 am
French is an awesum language 2 learn. Thanx to my French-Irish ex-spouse, I enjoy conversing in french
Now, im thinking of learning russian, new hubby is Russian-Italian

Kat, Sounds like you can learn a lot of different languages. That’s really cool!
February 19th, 2013 at 3:49 pm
It’s very cool to have the ability to master too many languages and use them. At this moment I have a Russian co-worker teaching me Russian and an aunt who speaks German
I am so confused at the end of the day

Kayla, I love reading, too.

Get your Pig Latin endorsement and the sky’s the limit. Maybe in 30th grade.
March 20th, 2012 at 8:06 am
Definitely thoughtsy, definitely diverse! Actually having the guts to turn around and decide that what you were doing isn’t right, that you want to re study and find something better! Very bold & brave! Go with it!!!

My hubs is addicted to lernin’ as well. He just kept going to school. He has 2 MBAs and a law degree and I swear he would have gone to med school if I had let him. I think he was eventually in the 43rd grade!
You can always do an online Italian or Spanish class. That way you can stay on your couch in your PJs!
March 21st, 2012 at 8:01 am
That’s a lot of school for your hubs!
I saw that the local college is offering an online Spanish class, but I’m afraid I’d slack.

I’ve never really stopped going to school, though I have a similar track record as you. I graduated college a year and a half early because I was tired of school, only to start grad school less than eight months later. Since then, I’ve finished my master’s degree (a year early), started a second bachelor’s degree (though I had to quit it due to employer funding cuts), and got certified both as a life insurance sales representative and a psychological human researcher.

I envy you. I only have dual degree in engineering. BA Industrial & BS Mechanical- I love goin to school. I enjoy learning & is still learning-
March 20th, 2012 at 8:55 am
I just have never been a school person. I’m glad people like you are out there that can pick up my slack.
March 20th, 2012 at 9:18 am
12 years elementary school, 5 years undergrad, 5 years two MA’s, 33 years 11th grade history teacher, 5 years adult ed at night: Hmmmm. That’s 60 years I think.
March 20th, 2012 at 11:21 am
Phenomenal!!!

Ha! May the gods bless ya! There isn’t much that could get me to face homework again. …Money. Maybe.

When I emailed my last assignment for my last degree, I sent a follow up email to everyone I know making them electronically pinky swear that in a couple of months when I started saying I missed school, they would stage an intervention.
I have lasted a couple of years, but of late have started dropping the hint. So far no intervention. Whatever happened to the sanctity of the pinky swear?
Isn’t Shannen Dougherty doing college in fake pants? I’m sure you could outstudent her and outfakepants her. Those are too verbs.
March 21st, 2012 at 8:02 am
I believe in the pinky swear. That’s serious business.

You never too old to keep learning. That’s what I’ve always said. Learning keeps us engaged as citizens of the world. So if you had to pick a hobby, that’s a great one to have. I applaud your efforts to continue your education, no matter where it takes you!
March 20th, 2012 at 11:24 am
That’s an amazing track! I’d say go for it…learning never ever ends & age is never important

I love how much vast and varied knowledge you’ve accumulated though! No one could accuse you of being stuck in a rut
March 20th, 2012 at 12:02 pm
I hope you are a trust fund baby. This gets expensive. I got a job at 17, and a going to college at night education at 30. The jobs were how I could afford college.
March 21st, 2012 at 8:03 am
No trustfund babies here. Taking classes at the local community college is less expensive than taking classes at a 4-year school. That’s the only way I can do it.
March 20th, 2012 at 12:16 pm
I graduated college early too – mostly because it was annoying by then.
Also – pre-calculus taught me everything I know about humility and embarrassment
March 21st, 2012 at 8:03 am
PreCalc…my first C. Bastard….
March 20th, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Me and Maths and English hate each other but I live in school for my histories
So cool!
Cheers

I’m in the same boat. Now that I’m out of school, I miss learning things (nerd). Currently, I am looking into a night class to brush up on Spanish. You definitely lose if you don’t use.
March 20th, 2012 at 5:22 pm
This post fills my heart with so much glee! I only made it to 19th grade, but I’ve faced lots of questions like, “Why on earth did you study that if you don’t use it in your professional life?” How many people actually do that? Isn’t there joy in knowledge itself? (YES!)
March 21st, 2012 at 6:56 am
I love this! I’m like you, I don’t get tired of the learning but i dod get tired of ‘going’. Why not do online courses? I’ve tried and for me they’re a bust. I need to be in the classroom.
March 21st, 2012 at 8:05 am
My masters was online. I would do online if it wasn’t a language course. I’m not sure how they do a language course online…I guess the teach posts videos so you can hear how the words are pronounced?
March 21st, 2012 at 11:15 am
Sooooo what is it that you do??
March 21st, 2012 at 11:37 am
My technical writing and freelance editing pays the school bills.
March 21st, 2012 at 11:47 am
Sounds a lot like me. I finally had to walk away due to medical reasons and haven’t taken a class since 2007. Then the medical issues caused the kids to need to attend school online and now I’m stuck in an office monitoring school for my 3 and reinforcing what their teachers are teaching them. The only thing I DIDN’T want to do when I grew up was be a teacher. This is a cruel joke, isn’t it?
March 21st, 2012 at 1:23 pm
I accidentally went to a sign language camp for deaf campers when I was little. For a brief bit after that, I wanted to be a sign language interpreter. That was the only time in my life I actually knew what I wanted to be when I grew up so it was sort of sad when I changed my mind. I could totally be a professional student, also. Better yet, all those school loans could be just placed into deferment forever. I don’t actually know if that is true, but it would be great if it were.
March 21st, 2012 at 9:03 pm
I am with you, I took classes until I was 29, and loved it. Am I doing anything with my degrees? No, not really, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
March 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 am
I heart school. I shall stay here for-ev-ah.
